How can you help?
Well, we’re glad you asked.
We love volunteers, and absolutely no experience is necessary. And if you already have some specific skills, so much the better!
Please understand that the Garden operates and thrives through the work of a lot of different volunteers who perform a wide variety of tasks.
And we need them all!
If you want to pull weeds or work some soil – great!
And if you want to help out with keeping the office humming along smoothly - great too!
We are fairly sure we have something that will interest you and match-up with your desire to contribute.
Below, you’ll see a pretty good break-down of the types of tasks we could use a hand with.
Just click on the tabs to read about them.
First, the Gardening stuff:
- Pull Weeds / Pick-up Trash
- Landscaping / Harvesting / Pruning
- Painting / Minor Construction Projects
On about 4 1/2 open acres in a windy place, you know there are going to be weeds growing and trash blowing.
Add to that the quality of the soil we’ve generated here at Vegas Roots and you almost have a full-time job dealing with weeds.
Of course, we can’t use chemicals, so they must be manually removed.
We want to keep the Garden looking as good as possible by not allowing trash or weeds to get out of hand.
So, this is actually one of the most important jobs we have!
One of the most critical parts of a good garden is the soil.
And a good gardener knows that making compost is a huge part of creating good soil.
That’s why we have a composting section in our garden and why our soil is so fertile.
But we could use some help with it. It’s not a huge job, but it needs frequent attention.
This will normally involve raking, mulching, soil blending/admixing and other general landscaping tasks around the Garden.
And since our garden grows year-round, there are almost always some plants that could use some thinning, pruning, trimming or harvesting.
From the walls to the growing plots to the buildings to…there’s usually something around here that could use a coat of paint.
And depending on what we have going on here, our resident carpenter “KW” might need your assistance building or repairing something.
For the Wordsmiths:
If you like to write, we can always use a well-written article or report to post on the site.
Topics can include things like:
– Your personal experiences in our Garden
– Any events you attended here
– What you grew in your plot here at Vegas Roots
– How this place makes you feel
– Organic gardening
– Organic foods
– Healthy living, etc.
We have a few ebooks we’d like to give to our monetary donors, but they need some work first – in both the editing and formatting departments.
If you are someone who really has a grasp of the English language and likes to do this sort of thing, we’d love to have your help.
We’re a non-profit community garden, so it’s all about the people with us.
And we can always benefit from more exposure to the Las Vegas Valley community.
The more folks that know about us, the more that will visit and/or get involved with us.
So, if you know how to write a decent press release or know other ways we can get the word out to the 2-plus million people in the Valley, we would love to have you.
For The Visual Types:
The Garden is continuously changing. If you saw it back in 2010 when we opened, all you’d have seen is dirt.
Since then, we’ve come a long way and the place just doesn’t look remotely the same as it did back then.
We’d love to have one or more skilled photographers come out here and document the Garden’s ongoing evolution on “film”.
Photos are huge online and we could always use current images of the Garden to post on our site and others like Facebook.
We don’t have to tell you how ever-present video is in our lives these days.
And since our Garden is both ever-changing and online (so to speak), capturing it on video and posting those videos online is probably the best thing we can do to get more exposure for our little sanctuary.
Lots of opportunities for creativity with video out here…
Web video is all the rage, especially when it’s viewed on billions of portable devices in increasing numbers.
We need some help with assembling all the photos and video clips we accumulate into videos showcasing the Garden and the events we host.
And For The Webbies:
If you have some skills as a webmaster, in web design or in internet marketing in general, we can use you.
There’s lots of stuff to do behind the scenes of a growing website, as you know…
It’s all about “eye-candy” nowadays and that’s where well-designed graphics come in.
We need folks who can do things like web graphics, infographics, PowerPoint slide design, event flyers and things like that.
Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, etc, etc.
You get the idea.
We could use some help with our social media stuff.
We currently have profiles/pages on Facebook, YouTube and Google Plus.
If you are good at creating short posts, viral images or anything that helps get Vegas Roots more attention and visitors (both physical and digital), you’re just what we need.
ATTENTION – WINTER CLOSURE NOTICE!
NOTE: You may still submit an application during our winter closure, but please be advised that we will not be responding to such inputs until February.
