That’s the premise behind the Vegas SOUP event, which stands for:
Vegas SOUP is more than just a delicious dinner, which, on top of soup, features bread, drinks and live music.
It’s an innovative micro-grant program.
Here’s How it Works:
At each dinner, representatives of small community organizations give short presentations on their current projects to the community members in attendance.
Community members pay a $10 donation for dinner and an opportunity to vote for the project they deem most worthy for the funding.
These projects aim to contribute to the vitality of Las Vegas in a multitude of innovative ways.
Awardees are “granted” the funds collected from those in attendance and will subsequently present their project at the next SOUP event.
Vegas SOUP is a recurring event with seasonal meals celebrating food sourced from the Vegas Roots Community Garden and creative community projects.
We hold events approximately every 2-3 months.
Here’s the flyer for our upcoming event:
And all SOUP events are organized entirely by volunteers.
With your help we will be able to bless an organization making change in our local community with a micro-grant.
How Vegas SOUP came to be:
After hearing about a similar event in Detroit, the director of the Vegas Roots Community Garden (a non-profit organization) decided to start such an event here in Las Vegas.
The events have been very well received and participation has been good.
But the garden is quite large and there is plenty of room at our next event for you!
Be sure to sign up for our newsletter so that we can keep you informed about upcoming Vegas SOUP events, as well as all the other events held at the Garden.
SOUP is an International Phenomenon:
Yes, you read that right.
Not only are SOUP organizations in over half the states in the U.S., but they are also present in Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Ukraine, Australia and Egypt.
There’s even a website called Sunday Soup (we are a member) that has listings of all the organizations that hold a SOUP event in their area.
How To Submit a Proposal:
We now have a downloadable PDF that covers the SOUP program in detail and includes a proposal form, if you are interested in learning more about taking part.
Maybe you have a way to meet the needs of some of the under-served people in our community?
That’s the very type of idea we are most interested in. As well as all projects that involve helping children and the elderly.
It takes only a few minutes to complete the proposal form. And a donation of a mere $10 to attend the SOUP dinner and present your proposal.
And you are welcome to invite as many people as you want and each of them can vote, so long as they contribute $10 to the grant.
