Yes indeed, garden supporters! Vegas SOUP will host our next event at 5:30 pm, on April 7th. And as always, it’ll be hosted right here at Vegas Roots. In case you were wondering why the SOUP is all capital letters, it’s because it is an acronym that stands for: Support – Organize – Unite – People And since the Las Vegas chapter of the international SOUP movement happens to be sponsored by an organic community garden, we actually serve soup created from the delicious veggies our garden offers-up in abundance. But we’re not unique in our meal offering. Many SOUP organizations across this country and others also serve soup as the meal during their events. What makes us unique is that the meal is freshly harvested and prepared from produce out of our dual-purpose garden and meeting place. An ultra-fresh, nutrient-packed meal in a most up-building and enjoyable setting. Sure, the “soup” thing gets double coverage. We’re ok with that. SOUP is a wonderful way for entrepreneurs, small business owners, change agents and movers and shakers to expose their ideas to like-minded community members. And possibly take home some free micro-grant money. Each of these individuals is given a few minutes to present their proposal on a project that will benefit underprivileged or under-served populations and/or positively affect the Las Vegas community in general. After all presentations have been made, all in attendance vote to select the project they feel to be the most compelling. The winner is awarded the revenues received from the $10 meal price each attendee is asked to pay. We are especially interested in hearing proposals for projects that are accessible to the majority of the community and that reach out to and involve children and seniors. We have a downloadable PDF available, with full details on this program, including an application to present a proposal. You can download it HERE, or on our dedicated Vegas SOUP page. Note: If you think you’d like to present a project at this SOUP event, the deadline for your proposal is March 17th. We love the whole concept of the SOUP program, since it helps so many people. Beginning with a single healthy meal with neighbors. And micro-granting is such an important part of overall community growth. And it’s a way for you to contribute directly to a worthy project that will benefit the whole community. Of course, this event is open to the public. It’s your community and your garden. We hope you’ll join us here at Vegas Roots Community Garden at 5:30 pm on April 7th. We’d love to have your support.

Yee haa! Marketplace at The Roots is off to a good start – and it’s gaining momentum! The Marketplace, the newest addition to the various events at Vegas Roots Community Garden, showcases lots of exciting and talented local vendors with an excellent variety of wares, all nestled within the Garden’s spacious acreage. The vendors’ offerings include some really great finds, like unique, one-of-a-kind and handmade gifts, artwork, crafts, soaps and body products, artisan jewelry and more. We think you’ll agree, it’s nice to be able to spend a few unhurried minutes in the open-air chatting with a friendly local small business person. It’s actually quite refreshing for a change. Here’s the list from the last two Marketplaces. Keep in mind our vendor list changes each month (and often each week) and is growing to our estimated maximum of 30. Vendors For Feb 9th and 16th All Together Now – Unique Handbands, Scarves, Incense, Shea Butter – Xena Foreman Minerva’s Soap Bath & Body Kraft – Minnie Rodriguez Cookie Lee Jewelry – Jean Botkin Salsa MaDel – Gourmet Handmade Salsas – Evelyn Rangel-Medina Thirty One Gifts – Nicole Moe Scentsy Flameless Candles and Scents – Yvette Reyes The Stitch In Time – Crafts & T-Shirts – Bobbi Lee Glover Hand Woven Rugs – Candy doTerra Essential Oils – Dawn Ehst 1ViZn – Wellness and Natural Weight Loss Supplement – Brenda Lloyd Patricia Hitchings – Artistic Creations Congo Justice – Non Profit Raising Awareness of Human Trafficking – (CongoJustice.com) (16th only) Music – provided by The Mass Distractors (16th only) Food Vendor – Senor Blues Mobile – Fresh Tex Mex (16th only) And wow, having a live band or professional DJ keeping us entertained is sure a lot of fun! In fact, the last few Marketplaces we had people of all ages hula-hooping and dancing to the music. If you happen to get hungry, we’ll have a fresh food vendor on-site, ready to serve you some freshly-prepared gourmet excellence. There’s lots of places to sit down, too. Relax and enjoy some food, the green growingness of the Garden and the fresh talents of one of our gifted local musical artists. And let’s not forget the pleasure of taking a stroll through the Garden and maybe even harvesting some super-fresh produce from our You-Pick Garden. Whether a first-time or frequent visitor, please know that your presence supports good ol’ non-profit Vegas Roots – your community garden – no matter where you happen to live in the Las Vegas Valley (or beyond). And we appreciate you very much. Thank you! If you missed the first few Marketplaces this year, don’t worry, all is well.

The Marketplace at The Roots schedule is now available! Yes, it’s official! Starting on January 19th, 2013 and going through May, we have a total of nine Marketplace events scheduled. There’s just the one event in January, but starting in February, we’ll be hosting two Marketplace events per month – on the second and third Saturdays of each month. This recurring market is a great addition to the events held at Vegas Roots Community Garden. Set inside the spacious and beautiful Garden grounds, it’s an open-air market that showcases lots of local vendors. The offerings range from handmade crafts, jewelry and art, to fresh, organic produce grown in the Garden. Vendors will vary from one Marketplace to another, so make sure to check our dedicated Marketplace at The Roots page for updates. There is no cost or hassle to park here and you won’t have to walk very far to get to the vendor displays. We have a great children’s playground, so by all means bring your youngsters! Please tell your friends and family about this ongoing event, so our wonderful vendors can justify their presence at this event and support the Garden and our community. We look forward to having you join us in the new year. In the mean time, enjoy the holidays (if you celebrate) and we’ll see you soon!

The post Marketplace at the Roots Schedule 2013 appeared first on Vegas Roots Community Garden.

After almost three years of being continuously open, Vegas Roots Community Garden will be closed to the public during the months of December 2012 and January 2013. We also won’t be accepting any new volunteers or community service workers during that time. We are going to use this time during the coldest and least productive growing season of the year to do some much needed renovations and repairs, as well as tackle a few projects we’ve had planned. It’ll allow us to prepare for the Spring growing season and more visitors than each of the previous years. Plot owners, this does not affect you! You may continue to tend and harvest from your plots as you have been. Any events we have planned during the two months will also continue as scheduled. In fact, our newest event, Marketplace at The Roots, has a Saturday market scheduled on January 12th. We’ll let you know all the details – here on our Marketplace at The Roots page and on our Facebook page. So, stop by often! Thanks so much for your understanding and support.

The post Vegas Roots Closed For Winter appeared first on Vegas Roots Community Garden.

“Las Vegas? You don’t want to live in Vegas! There’s no community”! - That was the reaction I got before transplanting our family to Las Vegas; uprooting them from suburban Portland, Oregon in 2006. While the family found ways to connect; church, school, work and the poker table- it wasn’t until I read about Rosalind Brooks and how, by faith, she had undertaken this crazy project; building a community garden in the heart of West Las Vegas, that real community started to form. Like many, I just started showing up at the garden on Saturdays. I quickly noticed that it didn’t matter how much money you have, where you come from, what you do for a living, what color you are or what kind of car you drive…we are all the same in the garden. The moment our hands touch the soil or peel back a leaf and discover a fresh, ripe tomato, we are consumed with a sense of child-like wonder and joy rushes in. After a few months of volunteering at the garden and making new friends- I teemed up with my carpool buddy and adopted a garden bed. We have enjoyed a 10 month growing season that has produced a steady supply of organic produce: kale, beans, peppers, lettuce, spinach, cilantro, carrots, tomatoes, jalapenos, and green chile. We have made it a habit to come by every Friday to check on the garden. I actually take a little pride in returning to the office after our lunch-time harvest with dirt under my nails and a huge bag of organic greens for dinner. I am even more thrilled to get to introduce friends to the garden who can experience a special kind of peace, wonder and community. I have learned from my plot neighbors and enjoyed visiting with them under the awning after playing in our gardens – it’s as if we are on a community porch, telling stories and growing… together. - Joan Paye

The post Joan Paye appeared first on Vegas Roots Community Garden.

I was first introduced to the garden by way of a grant that a group I was working with had gotten to help with the irragation & beautification of the garden. i myself had NEVER been to a garden & at the time was 31 yrs old. I fell in love from day 1!! My husband had been diagnosised with diabetes a yr earlier & by going to the garden I learned so much about food & the way it’s processed & the importance of GARDEN FRESH fruits, veggies, herbs etc. My husband and daughter have attended one of the cooking classes & learned how to cook fresh green bean casserole. I have been able to take many inner-city youth who otherwise wouldn’t have known anything about gardening or being able to help build a garden from the ground up to this AWESOME refuge right in their backyard. The youth have helped paint the rocks, murrals, they donated the entire playyard & can’t wait to see the amphitheater built. I’ve been able to spend time w/ my 5yr old daughter at the garden & she LOVES it!! It’s peaceful & positive. My 5 yr old has learned many ways to eat fresh & we love picking herbs to put in our sauces. She is more aware of the cause & effect of unhealthy eating & puts us in place when we want even a cookie..WE LOVE THE GARDEN!! Respectfully, Rachael D.

Vegas Roots Community Gardens is truly a gem for locals in Las Vegas. Being able to have a garden to grow fresh fruits, veggies and even cotton is something people never thought possible in the desert! Not only is the garden providing fresh healthy foods, but it’s also providing a place where families and friends within the community can come together and truly learn and grow together. Roz Brooks has created something we’ve all been wanting to see in Las Vegas, and we’re extremely happy that she has!

It was an awesome experience! Visiting the garden provided us with an opportunity to expose our Village of Hope and Whitney E.S. GATE and TAGS students to gardening and the growth process of fresh fruits and vegetables. They were very excited to be learn about composing and to contribute to creating good soil by collecting waste from school and composing it at the garden. Many of our students have never been out of their neighborhood, so the field trip to the garden and the nutrition information provided has helped them to be more health conscious and environmentally aware. What an excellent partnership we have! Thank you! Have a beautiful day!
